Embedded in a picturesque area with hills, forests and the most stunning peaks of the Carnic Alps, Bergsteigerdorf Mauthen is situated near the Italian border at the western end of upper Gailtal and the start of Lesachtal.

Mauthen offers an amazing historic background dating back to the era of the Roman Empire and has become a popular hiking hotspot.

Kötschach-Mauthen has also gained attention as the home base of the world’s first Slow Food Travel Region. ‘Slow Food’ is a concept that allows visitors to explore the original production of foods through the vast number of producers in the region. Baking bread in a local bakery, cheese making on the alpine meadows, learning more about honey and brewing beer in the local craft brewery is all possible through the Slow Food program.

KHW 403 - Your ideal base camp

As base camp for the KHW we recommend Bergsteigerdorf Mauthen. 

KHW from Vierschach/Sillian to Plöckenpass
Acclimatize in beautiful Kötschach-Mauthen for a couple of days before catching a taxi to Vierschach. Take the cable car to Helm and start your KHW hike. 4 -5 days later you reach Untere Valentinalm from where you either hike via Mauthner Alm, or catch a ride back to the valley and your base camp in Kötschach-Mauthen.

KHW from Plöckenpass to Thörl-Maglern
From the valley hike via Römerweg/Plöckenstraße to Plöckenhaus and further on to Zollnersee-Hütte. This part of the KHW takes you along alpine meadows with cheese producing huts to Naßfeld and further to Thörl-Maglern.
